How to Stop Paying a Modem Rental Fee
Look at your latest internet bill. If you see a line like "Equipment rental," "Gateway," "Modem lease" or similar, you're renting the box that connects your home to the internet. You pay that charge every month, for as long as you have service.
Many internet providers let you use your own modem instead. If yours does, you can buy one once and stop paying rent on it.
Step 1: Find the exact charge
Write down the line name and the monthly amount from your bill. That's how much you could stop paying each month.
Step 2: Check your provider's approved list
Search your provider's website for "approved modems" or "compatible devices." Only buy a modem on that list, and make sure it supports your internet speed. If you also have home phone service through your internet provider, check whether you need a special modem for it.
Step 3: Set up the new modem
Most providers let you activate your own modem through their app or website. Keep the rented one plugged in until the new one works.
Step 4: Return the rented equipment
Return it the way your provider says (store, shipping label or drop-off). Get a receipt or tracking number. Unreturned equipment can lead to a large charge later.
Step 5: Check your next bill
The rental line should be gone. If it isn't, call with your return receipt and ask for the charge to be removed and credited.
Every provider's rules are different. Check yours before you buy anything.
